🫚 is ginger root, added in Unicode 15.0 in 2022. People use it for cooking, ginger tea, cold remedies — and as a stand-in for red hair, since “ginger” means both the spice and the hair color.
Why are redheads called gingers?+
The term comes from the reddish-orange color of ginger root and ginger flowers. It became widespread in Britain and was popularized worldwide — about 1–2% of people have natural red hair, caused by a variant of the MC1R gene.
